There are four main roots of bid'ah (innovation): the Rāfidah, the Khawārij, the Qadariyyah, and the Murji'ah, each of which split into many groups until the number reached seventy-two, as mentioned by the Prophet ﷺ.

Imām al-Awzā'ī (RH) said: ❝Do not let any follower of bid'ah present his arguments to you, because this will generate confusion in your heart.❞ البدع والنهي عنها لابن وضاح

Imām Ahmad bin Hanbal (RH) said: ❝As for those who follow innovation and their own whims and desires, their help should not be sought in any of the Muslims' affairs, for that is most harmful to the religion.❞ مناقب الإمام أحمد لابن الجوزي
