Why A Person’s Du’as May Not Be Accepted
Here are some of the more important reasons why: Failing to send the blessings upon the Prophet (s): In a hadith, Umar (r) narrated that the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said:”Du’a is detained between the heavens and the earth and no part of it is taken up until you send blessings upon your Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم”(Tirmidhi #486)Showing impatience. Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said, “The invocation of anyone of you is granted (by Allaah) if he does not show impatience (by saying, “I invoked Allaah but my request has not been granted).” (Sahih al-Bukhari).When that person’s income is unlawful. Abu Hurairah reported that the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم said: “Verily Allah the Exalted is pure. He does not accept but that which is pure. Allah commands the believers with what He commanded the Messengers. Allah the Almighty has said: “O you Messengers! Eat of the good things and act righteously” [23:51-53]. And Allah the Almighty also said: “O you who believe! Eat of the good things that We have provided you with” [2:167-172]. Then he (the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم) mentioned (the case of) the man who, having journeyed far, is disheveled and dusty and who stretches out his hands to the sky (saying): “O Lord! O Lord!” (while) his food was unlawful, his drink was unlawful, his clothing was unlawful, and he is nourished with unlawful things, so how can he be answered?” (Sahih Muslim)If that person is hasty: It was narrated from Abu Hurayrah (Radiallhu Anhu) that the Messenger of Allah (Peace be upon Him) said: “(The Dua) of any one of you will be answered so long as he is not hasty in seeking a response and does not say, ‘I prayed but I have not had a response.’” [Narrated by al-Bukhari, 5981; Muslim, 2735]If that person is asking for something sinful or for the breaking of family ties: “A person’s Dua will continue to be answered so long as he does not pray for something sinful or for the breaking of family ties.” Narrated by Muslim
