It is Sunnah to pray with a sutrah infront...
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said “When one of you prays, let him pray facing a sutrah and let him draw close to it.” (Abu Dawud)
“Do not pray except towards a Sutrah.” (Saheeh Muslim)
The Sutrah must be atleast forearm in length
Nawawi said "It is recommended to have a sutrah in front of the one who is praying, and the minimum sutrah is the back of a saddle, which is the length of the forearm, or approximately two thirds of a cubit" (Sharh Muslim)
It is sunnah to keep the sutrah close infront when praying..
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said "If one of you prays facing a sutrah, let him draw close to it and not let the shaytaan interrupt his prayer.” (Abu Dawud)
Nawawi said "Between the place where the Messenger of Allaah prayed and the spot where he would prostrate there was only the space where a sheep could pass, This indicates that the Sunnah is for the one who is praying to be close to his sutrah"
Ibn Abdul Barr said "It is befitting that the worshipper should draw near to his Sutrah and not be far from it" (Al-Kafee, 1/45)
NOTE: If you are praying behind an imam the sutrah of the imam is the sutrah for the followers therefore it is not necessary for the individual worshippers to have a sutrah infront of them when praying behind an imam.
