Background: Some think, including many Muslims, that prophet Muhammad was engaged to a girl by the name of Aisha when she was 6, and married her when she was 9 years old and he was about 50.
While Muhammad’s (peace be upon him) union with a nine-year old girl may be shocking to our modern sensibilities, his betrothal to Aisha was just that: a betrothal. Aisha did not consummate her marriage to Muhammad (PBUH) until after reaching puberty, which is in complete conformity with the custom/tradition of the time in Arabia. Indeed it is an Islamic requirement that the girl reach the age of puberty before the marriage is consummated.
The most shocking aspect of Muhammad’s (PBUH) marriages is not his ten years of polygamy in Medina, but his twenty-five years of monogamy in Mecca, something practically unheard of at the time. Indeed, Aisha was the only virgin Muhammad (PBUH) married, with most of his wives being widows not that interested in sexual relations. Rather they wanted somebody to help financially and emotionally support as well as physically protect them and their children.
Furthermore, The NSPCC (National Society for the Protection of Cruelty to Children) [1], a UK based child protection charity, lists the following as signs of sexual abuse to children:
1. Sudden or unexplained changes in behaviour e.g. becoming aggressive or withdrawn
2. Fear of being left with a specific person or group of people
3. Having nightmares
4. Running away from home
5. Sexual knowledge which is beyond their age, or developmental level
6. Sexual drawings or language
7. Bedwetting
8. Eating problems such as overeating or anorexia
9. Self-harm or mutilation, sometimes leading to suicide attempts
10. Substance or drug abuse
11. Suddenly having unexplained sources of money
12. Not allowed to have friends (particularly in adolescence)
13. Acting in a sexually explicit way towards adults
Aisha and the Prophet (PBUH) were married and did have sexual relations, so points 5 and 6 are obviously fulfilled, whether non-Muslims believe that is right or not. But there are no other recorded signs of sexual abuse, simply because the relationship was not abusive. Aisha herself consented to the marriage, along with her father, and they lived a very happy life together.
Therefore, the Prophet (PBUH) did marry Aisha when she was 6 and consummate the marriage when she reached puberty at age 9, but put into context in 7th Century Arabia, such a marriage was completely normal and as in no way was it abusive towards her. Indeed only in the last hundred years of so, has this misconception arisen as sexual relations at such a young age have recently become unacceptable in Western Societies.
