QUR'AN AND MODERN SCIENCE::SENSES ACTIVE DURING SLEEP

[In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, the Most Merciful]

It's a common belief that when a person sleeps all his senses stops working and also sleep with the person. Its an old and common saying- "A person asleep is half dead." Half dead because he has life but shows no sign of life or senses. On the other hand Qur'an speaks quite contradictory to it.

"So We sealed their ears [with sleep] in the cave for a number of years." [Qur'an 18:11]

The original Arabic of the phrase "We sealed their ears" in the Qur'an is 'faḍarabna', which has been derived from root 'daraba' which means 'to seal off'. The word 'fadarabna' means 'so we sealed off'. This bears the metaphorical meaning of "We have made them sleep." Used in reference to the ears, daraba means "preventing the ears from hearing." THE FACT THAT ONLY SENSE OF HEARING IS MENTIONED HERE IS VERY SIGNIFICANT.

According to recent scientific discoveries, the ear is the only sensory organ active while a person is sleeping. This is why we need an alarm clock to wake up. The wisdom of the phrase "We sealed their ears" is, in all probability, that Allah closed the hearing of the young people, for which reason they remained asleep for many years. Modern day science affirming the Glorious Qur'an once again. ALLAH HU AKBAR
