"This is Allah's path, leading straight"

'Ibn Mas`ud said "The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) once drew a line with his hand in the sand and said "This is Allah's path, leading straight". He then drew lines to the right and left of that line and said "These are the other paths, on each path there is a devil who calls to it".

He then recited the ayaah "And verily, this is My straight path, so follow it, and follow not other paths, for they will separate you away from His path" (6:153).

Imaam Shatibee says "The straight path is the path to which Allaah has called and that is the Sunnah. And other paths are the paths of the people of disagreement who turn away from the Straight Path, and they are the People of Innovation. And the intent here is not the paths of disobedience because no one makes disobedience a path that he continuously treads upon in imitation of and resemblance to the legislation(shariah), but rather this description is specifically for the invented innovations".

Bikr bin ‘Alaa said "What this refers to is the devils amongst the men who call to their path and these paths are paths of innovations". Mujaahid said the other paths with devils calling to them are the paths with the innovations and doubts.
