Shaikh Ibn al-`Uthaymeen (rahimahullah) said:
Some of the people of knowledge have said: al-Hasad is: desiring that the grace bestowed by Allaah upon others decreases (or goes away); meaning: wishing that the grace is taken away from others, irrespective of the grace being in the form of wealth (and property) or status or knowledge or other than that.
The meaning which Shaikh al-Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah (rahimahullah) preferred: al-Hasad is: disliking that Allaah has bestowed his grace upon someone, even if he doesn’t wish that it should diminish.
