Salinity of the Seas

Photo: Salinity of the Seas

Another Sign of Allah, the Exalted, which points to His Greatness is the salinity that we find in the seas. Scientists say that in a single liter of seawater there are twenty-seven grams of salt, and that the entire world uses in one year more than fifty million tons of sea salt. The percentage of salt in seawater is equivalent to 3.5 percent of the total amount of seawater, and in a cubic kilometer of seawater there are 34 million tons of salt. If the salt of the sea were extracted and dried, and spread over the five continents, not leaving any spot uncovered with the salt that was extracted from the sea, the dried salt would cover the land to a depth of 153 meters.
The question which arises here is: From where did this huge quantity of salt in the sea come, which is sodium chloride?
Some of them say that the salt in the sea is equivalent to 4.5 million cubic miles, and all these precise figures are derived from scientific books.
From where did this salt come? How was it placed in the sea? There are many theories, one of which says that at the bottom of the sea there are salty rocks which have been broken and dissolved in this water. Some of them say that the cause is river water. All of these theories which try to explain the salinity of sea water find the way is blocked for a simple reason, which is that on Earth there are many freshwater lakes; if river water alone was sufficient to make seawater salty, then why has the water of these huge lakes – which are more like small seas – remained fresh for hundreds of millions of years? What is the explanation for that?
The reason why salinity has formed in seawater remains a mystery and there is no explanation for it except the following verse, in which Allah, Most High, says:
“And it is He Who has let free the two seas (kinds of water), this is palatable and sweet, and that is salty and bitter.” (Soorah Al-Furqan, 25:53)
So, it would never become salty, even if rivers empty into it and even if rocks are broken up into it and even if the rivers flowed through mountains of salt, the lakes would remain fresh and sweet.
Allah, the Exalted, says:
“And it is He Who has let free the two seas (kinds of water), this is palatable and sweet, and that is salty and bitter.” (Soorah Al-Furqan, 25:53)
This salty and bitter water is part of the creation of Allah, part of the design of Allah, the Almighty, that occurs by His will, “and He has set a barrier … between them” so the one does not prevail over the other, and when a freshwater river empties into the sea, it continues flowing for dozens or hundreds of kilometers, and it remains fresh, because between the two seas (types of water) there is a barrier the nature of which is still not understood.
With regard to the words, “and He has set a barrier and a complete partition between them” (Soorah Al-Furqan, 25:53), the barrier prevents the freshwater fish from moving to the salty water, and vice versa.
Another sign is that these oceans would not have existed were it not that when Allah, the Exalted, designed the Earth, He gave it many reservoirs. It is sufficient that the depth of some oceans exceeds ten kilometers. Who created these reservoirs? Allah says in Soorah Al-Waqi‘ah:
“Then tell Me about the water that you drink. Is it you who cause it from the rain clouds to come down, or are We the Causer of it to come down? If We willed, We verily, could make it salty (and undrinkable); why then do you not give thanks (to Allah)?” (Al-Waqi‘ah, 56:68-70)
“If He willed, He could make it salty like seawater – will you not give thanks for this blessing?”
In another Verse, Allah, the Exalted, says:
“And the two seas (kinds of water) are not alike: this is palatable, sweet and pleasant to drink, and that is salty and bitter.”
There are many stories which tell that thousands of people have died of thirst at sea. Ships have sunk and some of their passengers have been saved by getting into the lifeboats, but they died of thirst at sea. Then:
“And the two seas (kinds of water) are not alike: this is palatable, sweet and pleasant to drink, and that is salty and bitter. And from them both you eat fresh tender meat (fish), and derive the ornaments that you wear. And you see the ships cleaving (the sea water as they sail through it), that you may seek of His Bounty, and that you may give thanks.” (Soorah Al-Fatir, 35:12)
The depth of the sea is a sign, and the water of the sea is a sign, and its salinity is a sign, the fish in the sea are a sign, the shells and adornments in the sea are a sign. Allah, the Exalted, has placed many Signs on Earth, and He says:
“And on the Earth are Signs for those who have Faith with certainty.” (Soorah Adh-Dhariyat, 51:20)
