Seeking knowledge is better than voluntary worship...
Allah says "Are those who know equal to those who know not" [39:9]
An event from the life of Imam Malik highlighting the preference of seeking knowledge over voluntary worship..
Imam Malik once saw one of his students recording knowledge. The student abandoned his writing and stood up to perform a non-obligatory Prayer. Thereupon, Imam Malik said, "I'm surprised at you! That which you stood for is not better than what you abandoned." [Reported by Ibn Rajab]
It is only by seeking knowledge that we are able to perform our worship correctly and in according to the Sunnah! Seek Knowledge.
