Lets have a look at few ahadeeth:
Narrated Al-Bara' bin 'Azib: Allah's Apostle ordered us to do seven things and forbade us to do other seven. He ordered us: to follow the funeral procession. to visit the sick, to accept invitations, to help the oppressed, to fulfill the oaths, to return the greeting and to reply to the sneezer: (saying, "May Allah be merciful on you," provided the sneezer says, "All the praises are for Allah,"). He forbade us to use silver utensils and dishes and to wear golden rings, silk (clothes), Dibaj (pure silk cloth), Qissi and Istabraq (two kinds of silk cloths). (Sahih Al Bukhari, Book#23, Hadith #331)
Narrated Anas: A Jubba (i.e. cloak) made of thick silken cloth was presented to the Prophet. The Prophet used to forbid people to wear silk. So, the people were pleased to see it. The Prophet said, "By Him in Whose Hands Muhammad's soul is, the handkerchiefs of Sad bin Mu'adh in Paradise are better than this." Anas added, "The present was sent to the Prophet by Ukaidir (a Christian) from Dauma." (Sahih Al Bukhari, Book #47, Hadith #785)
Mu'awiya b. Suwaid b. Muqarrin reporxed: I visited al-Bara' b. 'Azib and heard him say: Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) commanded us to do seven things and forbade us to do seven (things). He commanded us to visit the sick, to follow the funeral procession, to answer the sneezer, to fulfil the vow, to help the poor, to accept the invitation and to greet everybody, and he forbade us to wear rings or Gold rings, to drink in silver (vessels), and to use the saddle cloth made of red silk, and to wear garments made of Qassi material, or garments made of silk or brocade and velvet. (Sahih Muslim, Book #024, Hadith #5129)
'Ali b. Abu Talib reported that Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) forbade wearing of silk andyellow clothes, and the Gold ring, and the reciting of the Qur'an in the ruku' (state of kneeling in prayer). (Sahih Muslim, Book #024, Hadith #5176)
Gold plating , Gold Alloys:
The prohibition of gold for men includes pure gold, gold alloys, cut pieces, joined pieces, gold inlay, etc. As for gold-plating and gilding, some scholars are of the opinion that such articles are forbidden for men if it is possible to extract gold from them (by peeling or shaving, for example); if no gold can be extracted from it, then such items are permitted. But let’s have a look on following hadeeth, which can help you in a better decision :
“Whoever avoids doubtful matters has absolved himself (from wrong) in his religion and in his honor.” (Muslim no. 2090)
Isn’t your religion and honor more worth than a gold plated watch or cuff link ?
