Imam Ibn Qudamah writes

Imam Ibn Qudamah writes

'Namimah (calumniation) occurs when a person tells someone about evil speech that was said about him by someone else but it is also connected to revealing things that are disliked be it a saying or a deed.

It is reportd that once Sulayman ibn Abd al-Malik said to a man "I have been informed that you have said evil words about me"

The man replied "I assured him that he did not" Sulayman then said "The man who told me is truthful"

The man replied "A calumniator cannot be truthful". Sulyaman said "Indeed you have spoken the turth".

Whoever receives a namimah for example when he is told that such and such a person has such something about him it is upon him to

-Not to believe the person who tells him because a calumniator is an immoral person whose testimony is to be rejected

-To advise him not to do this in future

-Not to think ill of his brother who he was informed that said evil words about him

-Not to let this evil claim drive him to begin spying on his brother to investigate the truth as Allaah says "And do not Spy not backbite each other" [49:12].

-Not to fall into the act himself which he has forbiden the calumniator to do.
