Quran 4:86

Surah An-Nisa, verse - 86
And when you are greeted with a greeting, as when it is said to you, ‘Peace be upon you’, greet, the one that greeted you, with better than it, by responding to him with, ‘Peace be upon you, and Allah’s mercy and blessings’, or return it, by saying back to him what he said; in other words, it is a duty to greet in one of these two ways, the former being the preferred one. Surely Allah keeps count of, He holds [you] accountable for, all things, and requites accordingly, including things such as returning a greeting. The Sunna specifies that one should not return the greeting of an disbeliever, an innovator, a wicked person, and of the one that greets a person who is in the act of relieving himself, or one in the bath, or one eating — indeed it is actually disapproved with the exception of the last. To the disbeliever [who says ‘peace be upon you’] one should simply say, ‘And upon you’.
सलाम करना सुन्नत है, और जवाब देना फ़र्ज़, और जवाब में बेहतर यह है कि सलाम करने वाले के सलाम पर कुछ बढ़ाए. मसलन पहला शख़्स अस्सलामो अलैकुम कहे तो दूसरा शख़्स “वअलैकुमुस्सलाम व रहमतुल्लाह “ कहे. और अगर पहले ने ” व-रहमतुल्लाह” भी कहा तो यह व बरकातुहू और बढ़ाए. फिर इससे ज़्यादा सलाम और जवाब में और कोई बढ़ौत्री नहीं है. काफ़िर, गुमराह, फ़ासिक़ और इस्तिंजा करते मुसलमानों को सलाम न किया जाए. जो शख़्स ख़ुत्बा या तिलावते क़ुरआन या हदीस या इल्मी बहस या अज़ान या तकबीर में मशग़ूल हो, उस हाल में उसको सलाम न किया जाए और अगर कोई सलाम करे तो उस पर जवाब देना लाज़िम नहीं. और जो शख़्स शतरंज, चौसर, ताश, गंजफ़ा वग़ैरह, कोई नाजायज़ खेल खेल रहा हो या गाने बजाने में मशग़ूल हो या पाख़ाने या ग़ुस्लख़ाने में हो, या बिना मजबूरी के नंगा हो, उसको सलाम न किया जाए. आदमी जब अपने घर में दाख़िल हो तो बीबी को सलाम करे. हिन्दुस्तान में यह बड़ी ग़लत रस्म है कि शौहर और बीवी के इतने गहरे तअल्लुक़ात होते हुए भी एक दूसरे को सलाम से मेहरूम रखते हैं. जबकि सलाम जिसको किया जाता है उसके लिये सलामती की दुआ है. बेहतर सवारी वाला कमतर सवारी वाले को, और छोटा बड़े को, और थोड़े ज़्यादा को सलाम करें.
