THE ADMONITION OF HAZRAT HASAN BASRI رحمه الله
He advised his students:
1. Do not deceive yourself into becoming too proud because you are in a righteous environment, for there is no place better than Jannah, and our father Sayyidina Aadam عليه السلام experienced there what is known to all.
2. Do not become proud merely because you worship often, for consider what happened to Iblees (Shaitaan) after he spent a great deal of time worshipping.
3. Do not think yourself great because you have met with righteous people, for there is no man more righteous than Sayyidina Rasoolullah صلى الله عليه وسلم , yet the unbelievers and hypocrites did not benefit by simply knowing him.
LESSON: Let each and every one of us realise that we should annihilate ourselves and continuously plead unto Allah Ta'ala for His mercy and protection. We have contaminated the environment with our sins, our worship is tainted with vanity and there is a decided lack of sincerity in our association. This is how hopeless our predicament is. The only saving grace for all of us is the mercy of Allah Ta'ala; therefore let us meekly raise our hands & ask for His infinite & unending mercy.
May Allah Ta'ala grant us His divine protection always!
