"Surely We will test you with a bit of fear and hunger, and loss in wealth and lives and fruits, and give good tidings to the patient." (Quran 2:156)
"Who, when disaster strikes them, say, "Indeed we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we will return." (Quran 2:157)
"They are those on whom (Descend) blessings from Allah, and Mercy, and they are the ones that receive guidance." (Quran 2:158)
People today believe that Inna lillaahi wa inna ilayhi raajioon is only to be said at the time of death but this is wrong. It can and should be said when any calamity or hardship strikes the believer and look at the reward that Allaah ﷻ promised the believer for saying it al hamdulillaah!
The Prophet ﷺ said:
"No servant is struck by affliction and then says, 'Innā lillāhi wa innā ilayhi rāji‘ūn. Allāhumma’jurnī fī muṣībatī wakhluf lī khayran minhā (We belong to Allah and to Him we will return. O Allah, reward me in my affliction and follow it up with something better for me),' without Allah rewarding him in his affliction and following it with something better for him."
