Going to the Masjid

Going to the Masjid
• Go Early
The Prophet salAllahu ‘alayhi wa sallam said, “If mankind knew (what) reward was in the call (adhan) and in the first row (saf) and found no other way to get that (reward) except by drawing lots, then they would have drawn lots…and if they knew what (reward) was in praying Salah Adh-Dhuhr in its earliest time (tahjeer) they would have raced for it…And if they knew the reward of ‘Isha and Fajr prayer in congregation, they would come to offer them even if they had to crawl.” [Bukhari, the Book of Adhan, Hadeeth # 615, Muslim, the Book of Prayer, Hadeeth #37]
Imam An-Nawawee said the word tahjeer means to be early for the prayer.
• Supplicate when going to the Masjid:
“O Allah, place within my heart light, and upon my tongue light, and within my ears light, and within my eyes light, and place behind me light, and in front of me light, and above me light, and beneath me light. O Allah, bestow upon me light.” [Muslim, the Book of Prayer, Hadeeth # 763]
• Walk with Sakeenah (tranquility) and Waqar (dignity)
Sakeenah is to move calmly and avoid frivolity and waqar is to lower the gaze and voice, and avoiding excessive looking around.
• Walk to the Masjid:
The jurists have stipulated that in order to increase the reward, it has been recommended in the Sunnah to go the Masjid walking and to avoid haste. The Shariah texts show the many merits in walking to the Masjid.
The Prophet salAllahu ‘alayhi wa sallam said, “Shall I not show you something by which Allah removes your wrongdoings and raises your level (in Paradise)?” The Companions said, “Yes! O Messenger of Allah.” He mentioned that from those things is taking many steps to the Masjid.” [Muslim, the Book of Purification, Hadeeth # 251]
• Supplicate when entering the Masjid:
When one of you enters the Masjid, send salaam on the Prophet and say,
السَّلامُ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ، اللَّهُمَّ افْتَحْ لِي أَبْوَابَ رَحْمَتِكَ
“Peace be upon the Messenger of Allah. O Allah, open for me the gates of Your Mercy.” [An-Nasai’, the Book of Masajid, Hadeeth # 728. Ibn Maajah, the Book of Masajid and Congregational Prayer, Hadeeth # 771]
• Enter with the Right Foot:
Anas ibn Maalik radhiAllahu ‘anhu said, “From the Sunnah is that if you enter the Masjid, enter with your right foot and when you leave, leave with your left foot.”
• Pray Tahiyaat al-Masjid upon Entering:
When one of you enters the Masjid, do not sit until you pray two Ra’kah of prayer. [Bukhari, the Book of the Night Prayer, Hadeeth # 1163]
• Proceed to the First Row
• Supplicate when Leaving the Masjid:
السَّلامُ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ، اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ مِنْ فَضْلِكَ
“Peace be upon the Messenger of Allah. O Allah, I ask You from Your bounties.” [Abu Daw’oud, 465]
