Saying of Sufyan ath-Thawri (RA):

'‎A man came to the Prophet (ﷺ) and said 'What do you think of a man who fights seeking reward and fame - what will he have?'

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said 'He will not have anything.' He repeated it three times. Then he said: 'Allah does not accept any deed, except that which is purely for Him.'"

The attitude of the salaf was that they would not seek fame. Its said that when Imam Ahmad would go outdoors he would disguise himself amongst the labourers to avoid bringing attention to himself, so that the people would see him as a labourer rather than a scholar and thus avoid attention.

- Sunan an-Nasai, Siyar A'lam an-Nubula 9/465‎'
