THE QURAN & HADITH ON RAMADAN

Photo: ‎THE QURAN & HADITH ON RAMADAN

It is that time of the year once again. It is the advent of a month that is filled with innumerable blessings, the thirty days which require a Muslim to observe one of the five pillars of Islam, fasting.

Ramadan is characterized not just by its obligation on every Muslim to keep away from certain things which are allowed in other months, but also by the weight of blessings attached to every good deed performed in this month.

✽✽✽The Quran on Fasting ✽✽✽

✔ “O you who have faith! Prescribed for you is fasting as it was prescribed for those who were before you, so that you may be Al-Muttaqun. That for known days. But should any of you be sick or on a journey, let it be a similar number of other days. Those who find it straining shall be liable to atonement by feeding a needy person. Should anyone do good of his own accord, that is better for him, and to fast be better for you, should you know. [Surah Al Baqarah 2:183 & 184]

✔ The month of Ramadan is one in which the Quran was sent down as guidance to mankind, with manifest proofs of guidance and the Criterion.1 So let those of you who witness it fast in it, and as for someone who is sick or on a journey, let it be a similar number of other days. Allah desires ease for you, and He does not desire hardship for you, and so that you may complete the number, and magnify Allah for guiding you, and that you may give thanks. [Surah Al Baqarah 2:185].

✔ You are permitted, on the night of the fast, to go into your wives: they are a garment for you, and you are a garment for them. Allah knew that you used to betray yourselves, so He pardoned you and excused you. So now consort with them, and seek what Allah has ordained for you, and eat and drink until the white streak becomes manifest to you from the dark streak at the crack of dawn.1 Then complete the fast until nightfall, and do not consort with them while you dwell in confinement in the mosques. These are Allah’s bounds, so do not approach them. Thus does Allah clarify His signs for mankind so that they may be Godwary. [Surah Al Baqarah 2:187].

✔ "Verily! We have sent it this Quran down in the night of Al-Qadr. And what will make you know what the night of Al-Qadr is? The night of Al-Qadr is better than a thousand months Therein descend the angels and the Gabriel by Allah's Permission with all Decrees, Peace! Until the appearance of dawn. [Surah Al Qadr 9:1-5].

✔ “Indeed We sent it down on a blessed night, and indeed We have been warning mankind. Every definitive matter is resolved in it, as an ordinance from Us. Indeed We have been sending apostles, as a mercy from your Lord indeed He is the All-hearing, the All-knowing”. [Surah Al Dukhan 44:3-6].

✽✽✽ The Hadith on Fasting ✽✽✽

☛ Abu Huraira reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever fasts during Ramadan with faith and seeking his reward from Allah will have his past sins forgiven. Whoever prays during the nights in Ramadan with faith and seeking his reward from Allah will have his past sins forgiven. And he who passes Lailat al-Qadr in prayer with faith and seeking his reward from Allah will have his past sins forgiven. [Bukhari & Muslim].

Let me intercede for him.' And their intercession will be accepted." [Imam Ahmad]

There are two occasions of joy for one who fasts: one when he breaks the fast and the other when he will meet his Lord". [Muslim].

☛ Abu Huraira (May Allah be pleased with him) reported that The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said: Many people who fast get nothing from their fast except hunger and thirst, and many people who pray at night get nothing from it except wakefulness. [Darimi].

☛ Every action of the son of Adam is given manifold reward, each good deed receiving then times its like, up to seven hundred times. Allah the Most High said, 'Except for fasting, for it is for Me and I will give recompense for it, he leaves off his desires and his food for Me.' for the fasting person there are two times of joy; a time when he breaks his fast and a time of joy when he meets his Lord, and the smell coming from the mouth of the fasting person is better with Allah than the smell of musk."
