Quran 17:36

'Quran Verse of the Day!

"And do not pursue that of which you have no knowledge. Indeed, the hearing, the sight and the heart - about all those [one] will be questioned." - #Quran 17:36

Mujahid ibn Jabr said that the meaning of "do not pursue that which you have know knowledge of" means that one should not accuse someone else of something regarding which one has no knowledge.

Fataadah, who was from among the scholars of his time in respect to the Quran and Islamic Jurisprudence and from among the Huffaz of his time, said it means that do not say you have seen something when you have not seen it, and do not say you have heard something when you have not heard it, and do not say you know when you do not know because Allah will ask you about all of it.

As regards the part of the Verse which reads "Indeed, the hearing, the sight, and the heart - about all those [one] will be questioned" it has been said that it means that the hearing and the sight and the heart will be asked about what the person did in his life.

Imam Tabari says that it means that Allah will ask these limbs regarding what their owner said, in respect to what he heard, saw, and knew. His limbs will testify against him by narrating the truth.

Others have said it means that a person will be asked about his hearing, sight, and heart (i.e. what did he use them for).
