The concept of fasting in Islam is not just confined to merely quitting food and water during daytime. It requires a lot more for one to complete a fast acceptable in the sight of Allah.
An-Nawawi records in his book Riyad us-Saliheen:
Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, sallallahu allihi wasallam, said:
"When one of you awakes in the morning for fasting, then he should not use obscene language or behave ignorantly. If anyone slanders him or tries to argue with him, he should say twice: Indeed, I am fasting."

Reported by Aisha razi'Allahu anha and Umm Salamah razi'Allahu anha:

The fasting in Islam implies not only upon quitting eating and drinking, it has a deep meaning. The real fasting requires one to quit all his bad habits and also stop following ones desires, and hence completely submit to the will of the one and only, ALLAH.
